Training a service dog requires lots and lots of treats. When you have Celiac Disease, handling gluten-filled treats is not an option. Here are the dog treats I feed and recommend for puppy training or ongoing dog training.
It is a good idea to have a variety of treats in your treat pouch at all times. I like to use higher-value treats for challenging or stressful situations. I always take higher value or newer treats to new environments. Here are some of the treats I recommend and use regularly.
Just Food For Dogs I am sponsored by Just Food For Dogs. I regularly use their jerky for high-value treats. The jerky comes in various meats: Chicken, Pork, Beef Brisket, and Venison. Suki loves them all. They are all single-ingredient dehydrated meat snacks. I break the pieces into small bites for easy rewards on the go.
Inaba Churu - These treats are like little squeeze treats for dogs. This is what I used to improve Suki's heel position for walking. I also use these treats for takeoff and landing on an airplane. I use both the dog and cat versions of these treats. If you want a treat to last longer, these are a great option.
Ziwi Peak Air-Dried - These are like little jerky pieces. They are very easy to treat because of their small size, and dogs love them. Because they are a food as well, they are not a high-calorie treat. These are a good everyday treat. They have a variety of chews and single-protein treats, which we also use.
Vital Proteins - This line of treats has a variety of proteins as well. They are also freeze-dried. For a Portuguese Water Dog like Suki, she likes the minnows or the salmon. They also have chicken, beef, and even duck.
